ECO Stars member The Dog Day Care Centre in Gorebridge has been upgraded to 5 stars following their recent reassessment and now has an all-electric fleet with the replacement of their final diesel VW Crafter van with a VW eTransport van.

The Dog Day Care Centre, founded in 2005 by Sarah Medlam, was Scotland’s first custom-built dog care centre.

They joined the ECO Stars Edinburgh and East Lothian schemes in July 2020 and supplied a complete fleet list to the ECO Stars team. An ECO Stars fleet expert followed up with an on-site visit to discuss fleet and fuel management practices and to complete the application form. Each vehicle was assessed along with the overall fleet management operation – the result was a 4-star rating. This was an excellent start and reflected their proactive approach to achieving operational efficiency.

As part of the ECO Stars process, once the assessment had been completed, a ‘Road Map’ was produced, highlighting key actions that could be considered and acting on the ECO Stars fleet expert’s recommendations, followed up with a maximum 5-star rating.

Sarah was delighted to find out that their star rating had been upgraded. “We are all immensely proud to have been awarded the top 5-star rating by ECO Stars and announce that we have become the first Dog Day Care Centre to run a 100% electric fleet of vans. Our journey to a zero-emissions transport goal for our dogs started in 2014 with one electric van, and we are now fully electric.”

Stuart McLean, Contract Manager for ECO Stars in Scotland, was equally delighted.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Sarah and her team, and The Dog Day Care Centre has become only the 2nd member of the Edinburgh scheme to operate a 100% electric fleet and the 1st in the East Lothian scheme!”
